ONCODIR Laboratory Integration Test 2

ONCODIR aims at increasing the awareness of citizens in Colorectal Cancer (CRC). To do so, a personalized citizen behavioral intervention system (NELI), a mobile app for use by the citizens has been delivered. NELI collects citizens’ data, displays it to the citizens, offers it to ONCODIR and gets from ONCODIR risk assessments, recommendations and educational content, all of which will be increasing citizens’ awareness.

End users have been involved in all stages of NELI development. Partner user organizations have helped establish the requirements of NELI and later have been evaluating the readiness level of these requirements. Users from partner organizations used NELI and provided feedback. The next step in establishing the readiness of NELI to be used in the pilots of ONCODIR is the testing by citizens external to the consortium. This is the Laboratory Integration Test ONCODIR LIT-02.

ONCODIR LIT-02 is a test with 40 actual citizens that evaluate NELI both in terms of technology readiness and in terms of data collection plan. It has the following objectives:

  • Use NELI for data collection from the citizens. It involves the definition, implementation and carry-out of the data collection plan with reasonable adherence by at least 20 out of the 40 involved citizens.
  • NELI data ingestion into ONCODIR. This is an integration effort between NELI and the mobile data registration service (MDRS) using Kafka messages from NELI to notify MDRS, invoking the API endpoints of NELI by the MDRS to get the data, and using Kafka messages from MDRS to NELI to acknowledge successful ingestion.
  • Delivery of recommendations from the clinical intervention system (DEPO) and risk assessments from the CRC predictive risk stratification method and behavioral blueprint (PYRAMID). This is an integration effort between NELI, PYRAMID, and DEPO using Kafka messages between these components. Both recommendations and risk assessments are not expected to be delivered to citizens since the beginning of LIT-02.

LIT-02 has started running this month, and is progressively recruiting citizens across the partner countries and beyond. Currently it has 24 participants that will use NELI (and indirectly MDRS, DEPO and PYRAMID) for 8 weeks. After the first 4 weeks and at the end of the 8 weeks each participant will be asked to answer a questionnaire. These questionnaires will form the subjective part of the evaluation of NELI. The collected data will be analyzed for the objective part of the evaluation of NELI. Anonymized versions of the data will be used for the development of other modules of ONCODIR, while they can also be made publicly available.
